Don't Go

Everyone is talking of fall, but I'm not ready to let go of summer! While we are spoiled with our 'temperate' weather here in San Francisco, some of our summer months still can be a little disappointing with stretches of fog and cold wind.

I want to hang on to the warm parts of summer as long as possible.

Thank you to:

Fishing

Went ocean fishing with Jesse and his Dad while we were in San Diego. A friend pointed out recently that on my time off I went camping and fishing-basically spent all my time out in nature. I think I really needed to get out of the city and to unplug and do something real and tactile. Sticking hooks through little sardines' gills and pulling in sea bass, rock fish and mackerel that we later cooked for dinner was definitely just the thing! Sounds so barbaric as I write this but it was great!

Color and Light

While I was in LA recently I spent the night at my friend Emily's house in Echo Park. It's full of beautiful light and Emily's creative touches. I hope to return soon to photograph there again. I posted a fun grid on my Tumblr blog too.

Serena Wellman for Fitness Magazine

I photographed the lovely Serena Wellman for Fitness Magazine. We shot at Carmel Valley Ranch on their sunny hilltop garden. We drove five hours in the car together that day, and talked non-stop! We found out we had a lot in common and spent a fun day together.

She recently joined Team in Training, which is a sports endurance event to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, if you'd like to make a donation you can do so here

Farina Cookbook

The Farina Cookbook has finally been released! I'm super excited; this is a collaborative project that I've been working on for quite some time and it feels good to see the final product. It's a farm to table concept that is organized by seasons. Shooting this book took me everywhere from Salinas Valley farms in California to truffle hunting in Alba, Italy and lots of interesting places in between.

You can order it on Amazon here, online from Farina here, and you can also walk in to Farina in San Francisco and buy a copy from them in person. (However a little bird told me that if you buy it on Amazon you get two complimentary dinner passes to eat at the restaurant...)

Hummingbird Girls

I photographed the Hummingbird Girls! Good friends in real life, Jen and Annalise have a 'penchant for vintage goodies and are happiest when dressed in eclectic secondhand treasures'. Their blog chronicles their personal style in creative locations around the Bay Area and beyond. We gathered in the Panhandle for an sunny afternoon game of croquet.

You can follow their inspirations and adventures here: blog / tumblr / facebook

Sunflower in a Can

This was a corner of my living room on a hazy summer day just a few years ago. Araya had just left for college. She didn't take her sunflower in a can. Next week she graduates from college. Time passes so quickly.

New York

Took a quick trip to New York to see Jesse, who spent a whole month there helping to open this place. Barely had time to shoot any pictures because we were too busy eating the whole time. A worthy trade off!

I got to go to Prune which I was super excited about, and lived up to all my expectations. Plus got to buy Gabrielle Hamilton's book (a signed copy:) from the restaurant. AND saw my first Cindy Sherman exhibit at the MoMA.

Fun whirlwind trip!

North Country

My mom and I spent a few days visiting my Aunt Nikki in upstate New York. Mom and Nikki have known each other since high school. They share a love of gardening, nature, books, and books on nature- especially Gene Stratton-Porter. We spend a few days exploring, picking flowers, shopping for pumpkins, harvesting porcupine quills and bittersweet vine, and driving around Saratoga Springs which is known for it's race track and it's mineral springs. I love Autumn!

Autumn in Farm Country

My Aunts Holli and Jenny have been working on their cabin in the woods outside of Laurelville, Ohio for ten years or more. They are finally living there full time. On my visit there were plenty of morning walks in the beautiful woods, corn fields, curious neighbors, pumpkin patches, collaborative meals, fresh apple cider and no cell service. Gotta love that.

Pumpkin Obsession

My mom has a bit of a pumpkin obsession. Every year as soon as September hits she starts looking for pumpkins to decorate her yard...and house...and porch, and to give away to friends and family. This year we happened to take a trip during that time to visit my aunts, one in Saratoga Springs, New York, and two in Laurelville, Ohio. The whole time she shopped for pumpkins. She claimed they were having a 'bad year for pumpkins' in Florida where she lives...but I think she just wanted to shop for pumpkins.

In Ohio we were lucky enough to come across Roger Kline who is just as passionate about pumpkins and gourds as she is, and who usually takes a first place ribbon or two in the Circleville Pumpkin Show. She was like a kid in a candy store. It's a good thing she just so happened to bring an extra bag to bring all her bright orange treasures home.
